June 2016 Viewer's ChoiceShown above is a very bright fireball as observed over southwestern Norway, a few minutes after midnight (local time) on April 26, 2016. It lasted several seconds before burning out in the upper atmosphere. Using the stars on this image as reference points as well as camera observations from Oslo and Gran (Norway), Norsk meteornettverk calculated the trajectory of this meteor. If fell directly above the sea, not far from Haram, Norway. Its velocity was approximately 43,000 mph (just under 20 kmps), and its altitude was about 23.6 mi (38 km) above sea level. Note that at this latitude and time of year the northwestern horizon is still light at midnight.
