Iridescent Clouds at Sunrise Over the Five Towers

Summary Authors: Marcella Giulia Pace; Jim Foster
The photo above features a lovely display of iridescence as shown at sunrise over the Five Towers and Mount Antelao (at left, standing 10,705 ft or 3,263 m) in the Italian Alps. If you happen to notice pastel coloring in the sky, in the vicinity of the Sun, the coloration likely results from irisation or iridescence in mid-altitude clouds composed of minute water droplets. Interference of sunlight diffracted around the outside of similar-sized, cloud droplets causes overlapping orders of the colors and thus the pastel or metallic hues. Always protect your eyes when looking anywhere near the Sun. Photo taken on June 2, 2016.
