Shown above is the ancient
Temple of Ġgantija on
Gozo island in the
Mediterranean Sea, some 60 mi (100 km) south of
Sicily. Built approximately
3400 BC, portions of the walls of this
Neolithic temple are almost 20 ft (6 m) high. The largest stone (
limestone) used in its construction measures 20 ft by 13 ft (6 m by 4 m) and weighs 57 tons. At left are statues found in one of the temple's interior rooms. The most ancient temples uncovered here, and on nearby Malta, date to 4000 BC, more than 1000 years older than the
great pyramids of Egypt.
