The title for this photo is the words I spoke out loud while reviewing photos I’d taken of Cappadocia during a recent trip to central Turkey. The photo above was taken on June 16, 2017, at 5:20 a.m. from a hot air balloon gently drifting over the spectacular landscapes of Cappadocia. With its dramatic vistas, light dancing over the amazing rock formations, rock caves and patches of cultivated land, it’s easy to imagine that is an illustration from the pages of a science fiction publication rather than an actual photograph. Over the past 2,500 years or so, perhaps beginning with the Assyrian Civilization, many of the outcrops found here, composed primarily of volcanic tuff, have been hollowed out and sculpted into living quarters, fortifications and places of worship.
