Carpathian Mountains of Romania

Shown above is an early fall view of the Carpathian Mountains in central Romania. This broad crescent-shaped range is the second longest in Europe, approximately 900 miles (1,450 km) long -- only the mountains of Scandinavia are more extensive. Composed chiefly of limestone, seen here above the tree line, they're considered geologically young. Because of their modest height, the highest peak in the Carpathians of Romania reaches 8,202 ft (2,500 m), glaciers and major snowfields are lacking, unlike the much higher Alps ranges to the west. The inset photo shows a stand of beech at peak color.
I live near the Sierra Nevada range of California and enjoy backpacking there, but the Carpathians are equally beautiful and also offer plenty of hiking and backpacking opportunities. Photos taken on October 18, 2017.
