Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River is a spectacular sight! Located about 5 mi (8 km) downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam (Lake Powell) and within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, this bend is an entrenched meander. It formed when tectonic forces caused uplifting millions of years ago, giving the river water the energy needed to carve into the Jurassic sandstone. Photo taken at sunset on August 14, 2017.
