The attention-getting lenticular clouds shown above were observed from Base Marambio (Argentina) in Antarctica. These lens-shaped clouds took shape when strong winds aloft generated atmospheric waves over the mountains on the Antarctic Peninsula. Lenticular clouds form in the crests of such waves, on the lee side of elevated terrain. They're reddened here by the rays of the rising Sun. Photo taken on March 11, 2018.
