Shown above is Samaria Gorge on the island of Crete, Greece. This impressive canyon extends about 10 miles (16 km) across southwestern Crete, dropping from an inland altitude of some 4,035 ft (1,230 m) to sea level, at the Mediterranean Sea. It's considered one of the longest gorges in Europe. Nearly all of the exposed rock formations here are composed of dolomite, a rock commonly found in sedimentary basins.
