Hiking down into the Grand Canyon is an amazing experience, to say the least. But the best part is that the journey becomes quieter and quieter with each step down into the canyon. Moreover, each step takes you further back in time. Layers of Coconino Sandstone, Bright Angel Shale, Tapeats Sandstone, and Vishnu Schist represent hundreds of thousands of years in Earth's history. When you reach the agent of all of this stunning erosion, the Colorado River, you realize that the river is still carving its way through the rock.

If you're fortunate enough to not only visit this remarkable canyon but to walk inside, once you reach the bottom take the time to sit on an outcrop over the river and let your trail-worn feet dangle in its cool waters. The photo above was taken from Bright Angel Trail in April 2011.

Photo Details: Camera: Canon PowerShot SX120 IS; Focal Length: 11.5mm; Aperture: f/3.5; Exposure Time: 0.0008 s (1/1250); ISO equiv: 160.
