Shown above is the December 2018 eruption of Mount Etna on the island of Sicily (Italy). This photo was taken on December 25, 2018, the day after the eruption began. Mount Etna (10,900 ft or 3,330 m), lies above the convergent plate margin between the African and the Eurasian tectonic plates. Local volcanologists reported that this was Etna's first flank eruption in more than a decade. Ash covered nearby villages and associated minor earthquakes caused slight damage to some buildings.
