The photo above shows rapid hillslope drainage by a subsurface soil pipe, disclosed in a roadcut in Alameda County, California. Natural soil pipes are common in clay-rich soils, characteristic of this area, on slopes that are quite steep. Note the slight earthflow visible on the near side (closest to camera) of the soil pipe outlet. Photo taken on April 12, 2010.
