September 2013 Viewer's Choice In late June 2013, the rolling cloud pictured above swept over Lofoten, Norway. Here in the high north we had never experienced such a weather phenomenon before. We called it han tykje (the devil). Roll clouds aren't just associated with thunderstorms or confined to regions where tropical weather prevails. Though they're rarely observed in Arctic areas, they can be seen anywhere strong outflow boundaries form -- they tend to form immediately behind these boundaries.
