Shown above is the endorheic basin of Laguna Verde (green lagoon) in the central Andes Mountains of Chile. The lagoon, actually a salt lake, lying 14,200 ft (4,350 m) above sea level, is primarily replenished by melting snow. The eye-catching turquoise color of the lake results from suspended sediments as well as the algae that thrive here.

Laguna Verde is surrounded by a series of towering volcanoes -- 7 of the world’s highest 12 volcanoes are found in the Central Andes. Photo taken on April 25, 2019.
