Shown above is an odd-looking photo of cloud-to-ground lightning as observed from Nicosia, Cyprus, on April 19, 2019. It appears different because the leader is ascending rather than descending. Upward lightning is typically reported when there’s a positive cloud-to-ground flash close-by. As a result of the change in the electric field by a preceding flash, an ascending positive leader is initiated from tall objects, such as a tower, which is what was observed in this instance
