Shown above at center is Mount Pissis, its summit concealed by a low-hanging cloud deck. The view here is from the Atacama Plateau. Mount Pissis is an extinct volcano in the Andes mountains of Argentina, straddling the border between the provinces of Catamarca and La Rioja. At 22,287 ft (6,795 m) it’s the third highest summit in both the Southern and Western hemispheres and the second highest volcano in the world (behind Ojos del Salado at 22,615 ft or 6,893 m). This photo was snapped in early autumn, April 25, 2019, so snow was just beginning to accumulate on Pissis’ lower flanks. Note the Andean flamingos in the foreground.
