The dramatic shelf cloud shown above was observed over the ocean, off Hollywood, Florida, early in the evening on May 13, 2019. Note that it’s detached from the patent thunderstorm that caused it. Though not always dangerous, it’s best to take cover when storm clouds like this approach. Typically, the strongest winds are clocked just after the gust front passes overhead. Fortunately, there were few reports of damage associated with this storm.
