The photo above shows what looks like a geological rainbow -- in shades of Neapolitan or sherbet. It was snapped in the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, in the Mojave Desert. The rock formations here are composed primarily of sandstone, though; some limestone, calcite, gypsum, and quartz can be found. The eye-catching colors of the outcrop in the foreground result from oxidation of sandstone. Note the desert varnish (darkened surfaces) at upper left. Photo taken on May 20, 2013.
