Shown above is a fiery sunset and crepuscular rays as viewed from the coast of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, on August 5, 2019. Clouds below the horizon are casting their shadows across the western sky. In order for these rays to be discerned the atmosphere must be dusty. Lingering sunlight scattered off the tiny particles of dust permits the projected rays to be easily observed.
