The photo above features the Arrabida Mountains (Serra da Arrábida) of southwestern Portugal, some 17 miles (27 km) south of the Portuguese capital city, Lisbon. These low mountains (highest summit is 1,644 ft or 501 m high) are home to several unique plant and animal species. The road that winds through this Natural Preserve Park offers attention-getting landscapes. Shown here, in the background, are the Troia Peninsula and the mouth of the River Sado. Although this region of Portugal is located on the east Atlantic coast, in many ways, it’s more Mediterranean-like. Photo taken on August 13, 2010.
