Featured above is a fogbow or cloud bow as observed beneath the Tofana di Rozes in the Dolomites of northern Italy. Standing 10,581 ft (3,225 m) the stunning Tofana di Rozes is one of the most conspicuous peaks in the Dolomites, a World Heritage Site.

What a surprising sight it was to see this suggestive and ephemeral bow appear before me! Though visually similar to a rainbow, it’s achromatic due to the small size of the fog droplets that discourage the dispersion of light and, consequently, its separation into the colors that make up the visible spectrum.
