Summary Author: Roberto Porto
Shown above is a large lenticular cloud (altocumulus lenticularis) as observed at sunset, high over the Teide volcano (12,198 feet or 3,718 metres) on Tenerife Island in the Canary Islands (Spain). Note that an accessory cloud or cap cloud can be seen just above Teide’s summit. Such cloud formations, while not uncommon to Teide, are nonetheless always attention-getting. For more about how these lenticular and cap clouds form see the Earth Science Picture of the Day for January 12, 2017. Photo taken on October 25, 2019.
