Summary Author: Jim Foster

The map featured here shows Northern Hemisphere snow and ice cover as observed on December 20, 2019. Visible and infrared satellite data is used to derive the areal extent of both snow and ice. The snow cover extent as of December 20 was near the long-term, December mean value of 42 million sq km. However, while the departures from normal are generally small for both North America and Eurasia, very large negative departures are recorded for eastern Europe and western Russia; whereas large positive departures are documented in western and northeastern China.
