Summary Author: John Kupersmith
Shown above is an exceptionally long Sierra Wave lenticular cloud formation that dominated the sky over Washoe Lake, Nevada. Lake Tahoe is just over the ridge at right. These orographic clouds may form when strong winds blow across mountain ridges, creating an atmospheric standing wave or lee wave. This one lasted from mid-afternoon until after sunset.
