The image above shows Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, as observed from northeastern Italy (Lorenzago di Cadore), on February 15, 2020. It was made using the blur technique, which here highlights the Dog Star’s color variations. The light from Sirius is white – a mixture of spectral colors. But our atmosphere breaks down its light into different wavelengths of the visible spectrum, creating these lovely colors. Look for brilliant Sirius in the southern sky (for people in the Northern Hemisphere), soon after sunset.
