The photo above shows a crystal-clear tidal pool, framed by limestone, on the coast of Sicily, Italy, not far from Syracuse. It was taken from a bike path overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, about noon on November 15, 2019. Home to crustaceans, fish and other marine and intertidal creatures, particularly at low tide, a clear pool such as this one is like a natural aquarium. Note that tides in the Mediterranean Sea are limited in height (compared to tides along ocean coasts) primarily because the sea’s entrance to the Atlantic Ocean is so narrow. The rock at right reminds me of the head of a shark.
