This impressive shelf cloud appeared over Bonn, Germany, on the afternoon of June 17, 2020. An intense thunderstorm ensued with strong winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning. These convective clouds, a type of arcus cloud, tend to form along the leading edge of strong thunderstorms due to the interaction between the storm’s downdrafts and the very warm, moist air that feeds the storm.
