Seen above is a trumpet lichen (Cladonia fimbriata) also known as cup lichen. Lichen are a complex symbiosis of fungus and a photobiont, generally an alga and/or cyanobacteria which aid in the photosynthesis process. The fungi protect the algae or cyanobacteria as well as provide water and nutrients. Cladonia fimbriata can be recognized by their tiny (2 cm) stalk (podetium) that ends in a cup and which looks like a golf tee or a trumpet. Image taken in Weisenstein, Germany on November 9, 2020.
