Teachers involved in the History of Winter (HOW) 2004 workshop are shown above collecting lake ice core samples from Lake Placid, New York. Thin sections from these ice cores will be made and viewed in a microscope with polarized light to observe the ice crystal size and texture. This year's week-long workshop is ongoing now (February 15-21, 2004) and is designed to actively involve NASA Explorer School teachers in snow and ice research.
