These scary looking mammatus clouds accompanied severe storms that marched across the Rocky Mountains and into Colorado Springs, Colorado, on a summer’s day a few years back. Formed by downdrafts pushing cool air toward the base of the storm, mammatus are rarely as mean as they appear. Nonetheless, it’s comforting to have shelter close by when clouds like these take shape. Photo taken on July 10, 2013.
