Shown in the photo above is a rain shaft spotted in August 2016 while driving southwest of Buffalo, New York. This specific cloud burst was one of several that occurred day, including one east on I-90 near the New York-Pennsylvania border. Rain shafts are a type of convection storm that have strong centralized updrafts and downdrafts and produce very localized precipitation.
