Piton de la Fournaise on Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean is one of the most active shield volcanoes in the world. During its last eruption, from December 22, 2021, to January 17, 2022, very fluid lava flows were observed, the longest being more than 1.3 miles (2 km) in length. Fortunately, this fiery flow was confined to the summit region, which is completely uninhabited. Bottom photo shows a closeup view. Photos taken in January 2022.
