To be able to see the circle like features in the tree canopy shown above, the solar elevation and my angle of incidence had to be just right. Branches and twigs that are roughly perpendicular to the Sun act as mirrors of sorts, scattering light back towards the viewer. It’s our pattern-seeking brains that merge the individual glints into circles. Photo taken on January 4, 2023.
