Shown above is the conjunction of Venus and Saturn as observed above the Church of Santa Maria in Castello. The photo was taken looking west during the early evening of January 22, 2023, when these two planets were but 1/2 degrees apart from each other. Brilliant Venus was shining at a magnitude of -3.9 while Saturn was shining at 0.7. Note the corona about Venus.

The Romanesque style cathedral of the Church of Santa Maria was built during the years 1121–1208 and served as a religious center until 1435, after which it was abandoned. It’s been restored several times over the centuries.

Photo details: Nikon Z9 camera; 1600 ISO, Sigma 135/1.8 lens, closed at /6.3; 1 second exposure.
