On the photo above it took me a minute to realize what I was seeing as my flight was descending into the Frankfurt-Hahn Airport in Germany. How could the spout like cloud at center protrude through this cloud bank? It turns out that the cloud bank is at ground level -- a fog bank just above the surface and perhaps only 50 m or so (165 ft) in thickness. The "spout" is the water vapor exhausted by an industrial chimney. It's classified as a homogenitus cloud formation. In this case, because it likely persisted for several hours, it's referred to as a homomutatus cloud. Photo taken on the morning of November 1, 2022.
