Shown above is a particularly eye-catching sunset I observed from downtown Turin, Italy on February 2, 2023. After several days of clear weather, thanks to an area of high atmospheric pressure stationed over western Europe, a layer of mid-level altocumulus and altostratus clouds drifted over the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Mountains of western Italy. The undersides of these clouds were lit up by setting Sun’s last rays. The increased path-length these rays take through the atmosphere when the Sun is near the horizon acts to wash out the shorter wavelength (green, blue and violet colors) of the visible spectrum, allowing the longer wavelength oranges and reds to dominate the western sky.

Photo details: Canon EOS 600D camera; stitching of 3 frames; 1/200 second exposure; f/ 5.6; 47 mm focal length; ISO 800.
