Cell Division: A Nod to Antonie van Leeuwenhoek and Robert Hooke

As shown above, put sea urchin sperm and egg together on a microscope slide and cell division starts almost immediately, within seconds. A phase contrast microscope was used to make this image. Each time I make observations with a microscope I give a salute to Antonie van Leeuwenhoek and Robert Hooke and all of the scientists who opened the door to what may be observed under magnification that exceeds what the naked eye can see.
