Flying Through Iridescent Clouds

Summary Author: Shreya Roy
Just before sunset one day this past summer these magical clouds appeared in the western sky near Kolkata, India. Iridescence is caused by the diffraction of sunlight around a thin screen of nearly uniformly sized water droplets that compose mid-level type clouds. Note that because these droplets are so tiny (often hundreds of times smaller than raindrops), refraction of sunlight becomes secondary to diffraction. Photo taken on July 5, 2023.
