For an extraordinary sunset such as this the positioning of the clouds and the Sun have to come together at just the right moment. Without some clouds in the western quadrant of the sky and absent any aerosols (dust, pollen ash) sunsets will be unremarkable. On this summer's eve, cirrus clouds take the stage. In addition, the closer the Sun is to the horizon, the longer the path-length of its rays, and therefore the redder the sky appears.
