Shown above are photos of an attention getting sky captured as Tropical Storm Ophelia passed over Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. They were taken on September 24, 2023, while I was standing atop a small sand dune. In the top photo I was facing toward the south then turned in the opposite direction to take the photo at bottom. Tropical force winds by definition are between 39 and 73 mph (34-63 knots), so are quite capable of churning up seas. Note the bright white surf in addition to the heavy cloud cover.
