Pantano Longarini ( Longarini Swamp), in the southernmost tip of Sicily, Italy, was unrecognizable as a wetlands area in late summer/early autumn this year. Spreading over an area of approximately 500 acres (202 hectares), it constitutes a very important "oasis" for migratory birds preparing to cross the Mediterranean Sea, towards the African continent or returning to Europe. But following several very dry years and the extreme heat of this past summer, Longarini Swamp is much more dessert-like than swampy. Photo taken on October 15, 2023, at 09:05 a.m. (local time).

Photo details: Panorama taken with Nikon D700 camera; Nikkor 50 mm lens; ISO 400; f/10; 1/400 second exposure.
