This beautiful nightscape photo was captured in Villarrica National Park of southern Chile, some 6 miles (10 km) from the city of Pucón. The erupting volcano is called Villarrica but is locally referred to as Pillán, or house of the pillán (spirit).

Villarrica is a nearly perfectly shaped stratovolcano standing 9,668 feet (2,947 m) above sea level. It’s one of the most active volcanoes in South America. In fact, just a few weeks ago, strombolian activity and crater incandescence was noted on webcam images. Photo taken on December 17, 2022. The Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud are at upper right.
