The view above is looking east from part-way up Mt Ossa, the highest mountain in Tasmania, at 5,305 ft (1,617 m). Mt Ossa is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This mountain was shaped by glaciation -- ice carved out the landscape over thousands of years. Thus, its surrounds feature numerous cirques and sharp ridges.

Variations in altitude and climate in the Tasmanian Wilderness Area create different ecosystems, from wet eucalyptus forests at lower elevations to alpine vegetation at higher elevations. This area is particularly rich in biodiversity. It’s home to many unique flora and fauna, some of which are only found in Tasmania. Photo taken on October 12, 2023.
