The photo above shows a splendid 22-degree solar halo over the skyline of the Roque de Los Muchachos astrophysical observatory in the Canary Islands. Because the weather can change quite frequently here, there are seemingly plenty of opportunities to observe optical phenomena such as solar and lunar halos, particularly when cirrus type clouds, composed of hexagonal ice crystals, move in. A full halo can only be reported when the ice crystals are more or less randomly oriented within these clouds. It forms when sunlight passes through one the side faces of these crystals and is bent 22 degrees before exiting through an alternate side face. Photo taken on October 15, 2023.
