Shown above the Sun casts an extended shadow of Mauna Kea's summit, on the Big Island of Hawaii, against a backdrop of clouds. For this effect to be observed an abundance of aerosols, such as dust particles, must be present in the lower atmosphere. The aerosols outside of the shadowed area act to scatter sunlight. However, inside of the shadow, this scattered sunlight is absent. Note that because of perspective all mountain shadows projected in this way appear triangular-shaped. Photo taken on the morning of August 24, 2022.
