The union of a meticulously tended home garden and the adaptable kumquat plant, a petite ornamental tree ideal for container cultivation, epitomizes a symbiotic partnership. Kumquats are small citrus fruits that closely resemble oranges but are much smaller in size. They belong to the genus Fortunella (Citrus family) and are native to China and eastern Asia. Their fruit is unique because unlike other citrus, the skin of a kumquat is sweet, while the inner flesh is quit tart. Kumquats are often eaten whole. Some enjoy eating them raw, while others use them in various culinary applications such as making preserves, marmalades, sauces, or incorporating them into deserts, salads, and cocktails.
Kumquat trees can be grown in subtropical or temperate regions; however, they require plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil to thrive. This fruitful tree is considered a symbol of prosperity and good luck during the Chinese New Year. Photos taken on December 2, 2023, in my home-garden in Rishon Lezion, Israel.
