The photo shown above was captured while driving toward the snow-capped Villarrica volcano on a very starry spring night. This picturesque volcano (9,383 ft or 2,860 m high), just 12 miles (21 km) from Pucon, Chile, is one of the most active in the Andes Mountains. Villarrica's eruptions are termed strombolian  -- frequent but not violently explosive events. Here, it's ejecting incandescent material several hundred feet above its crater rim. Photo taken a few minutes before midnight on November 8, 2023.
