Shown above is a paper moon, as photographed on the night of May 22, 2024, from the Galileo Galilei School (T. Campailla High School) in Modica, Italy. It's the result of a Photography and Cinematography course that I organize for the students at our school. The aim of the course is to help students discover the world around us.
For this lesson, I remembered a photo by Jeff Graphy (Earth Science Picture of the Day for May 16, 2022) that particularly affected me. The author projected the Moon onto a wooden palette. So, I thought I'd try to do something similar. I used my 6-inch telescope, a 40 mm Plossl eyepiece and a 20 x 27.5 cm sheet of photographic paper. The result was fantastic! Both students and teachers became children again, capable of being happy for a simple "paper moon."
