This mindboggling moonbow and green aurora was captured from Abisko National Park, Sweden on November 20, 2018. The phase of the Moon (unseen here) was waxing gibbous. But even when the Moon is full and bright, its light is faint compared to sunlight. Thus, moonbows appear wan in comparison to their daytime cousins since their light just isn't bright enough to activate the cone receptors in our eyes. Note that whether from the Sun or Moon, the source of illumination must be less than 42 degrees above the horizon for a bow to actually be seen.
