I photographed the intriguing scene above showing pink colored waters and bright blue skies at the Trapani and Paceco Saline Oriented Nature Reserve (Sicily, Italy). This protected environmental reserve, managed by the World-Wide Fund for Nature-Italy hosts a wealth of biological diversity. The characteristic pink color of the water, which ranges from intense pink to pink-orange, is due to the presence of a particular micro-algae, Dunaliella salina, capable of thriving in hypersaline environments. The saltern ponds featured here are used to extract salt from seawater. Photo taken on July 11, 2021.
