Cumberland Falls

Photographer and Summary Author: Dale L. Hugo

Cumberland Falls on the Cumberland River in Kentucky is the secondnd highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River in the US after Niagara Falls. Famous for it's Moonbow visible on nights that are clear and have a full moon, I took the pictures of it's equally impressive SUN bow. The water of the Cumberland River falls 68 feet (21 m) over sandstone onto flat rocks beneath the falls which generates huge amounts of spray, thus the rainbow is intense anytime the sun shines on the falls. The Moonbow is, of course, far less intense, but its ethereal beauty abounds for those who see it.
